Beehives(蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops.‎ In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.‎ Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in Northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.‎ From a distance, Lucy switched on the prerecorded sound of angry bees while ‎ at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall(瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.‎ Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial(最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.‎ ‎1.We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of ________. ‎ A.loud noises B.some crops C.video cameras D.angry bees ‎2.As mentioned in the passage, Lucy________.‎ A.works by herself in Africa B.needs to test more elephant groups C.has stopped elephants eating crops D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms ‎3.Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?‎ A.To record the sound of bees.‎ B.To make a video of elephants.‎ C.To see if elephants would run away.‎ D.To find out more about the behaviour of bees.‎ ‎4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.‎ B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.‎ C.Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.‎ D.Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.‎ ‎【文章大意】 本文为一篇科技报道。 故选A。 ‎ A ‎ There were many famous poets from different periods of time in Chinese history, and thousands of their poems are still read and appreciated today.‎ ‎ To arouse people's interest in those classic Chinese poems and promote cultural heritage,China Central Television(CCTV)produced a TV show-Chinese Poetry Competition. The finale(终场)of the hit show's second season was shown on Feb.7 this year.‎ ‎ Wu Yishu,16,who studies at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, came out on top.In an earlier episode(一集),Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section entitled "Feihualing".The game's theme was "yue",meaning "moon" or "month" in Chinese. She recited the lines from the Classic of Poetry, the earliest collection of poems in China: “In July, the crickets(蟋蟀)are in the field. In August, they are in the yard.In September they are at the door.In October, they enter and crawl under our beds.”‎ ‎ “I really admire her knowledge of poems,”said Huang Zijin,16,a Senior 2 student from Ningbo High School in Zhejiang province.“The first time I saw her wearing traditional Han clothing an TV,I was very impressed by her classical looks. She fulfills all my fantasies for classic Chinese women's talents. What's more, she always appears so calm throughout the show, which is very unusual for her age.”‎ ‎ As the old saying goes,“One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance.”‎ ‎ “Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one's view of life and developing one's inner world," said Li Bo,an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Competition’s second season.‎ ‎ When it comes to teaching people about poetry,Li Dingguang, the show's academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic(审美的)and emotional sides, and guide the students to lose themselves in the poems' rhythmic(有节奏的)and rhyming lines.‎ ‎ “Although the amount of ancient Chinese poetry in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,”Li Dingguang told China.org.cn."Therefore,it’s important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of ‎ poetry."‎ ‎21.What's one of the purposes of the TV show Chinese Poetry Competition?‎ A.To entertain people by enjoying Chinese poems.‎ B.To see who can recite the most classic Chinese poems.‎ C.To fulfill people's fantasies for Chinese women's talents.‎ D.To make more people interested in classic Chinese poetry.‎ ‎22.From Paragraphs 3 and 4,what can we infer about Wu Yishu?‎ A.She is a talented and elegant Chinese teenager.‎ B.She has learned a large amount of poetry from textbooks.‎ C.She is always calm in the show like other competitors of her age.‎ D.She amazed the audience with the lines from the Classic of Poetry in the finale.‎ ‎23.According to Li Bo,why do people learn poetry?‎ A.To gel good marks in examinations. The small team I worked with often seemed busy,so rather than giving ideas that might get turned down,I stayed back.‎ ‎ After four months,my bass called me into his office. The meeting was going well until he told me that despite the great work I had produced, the team had held a meeting and decided,"We don't think it's the right fit."‎ ‎ I must have looked confused."You're ambitious, intelligent and will he very successful,"my boas said."But you haven't made enough effort to join the team. You lost the enthusiasm you showed in your interview. That won't work lone term, and if I could give you one piece of advice,it would be to let your guard down."I couldn't believe that performing well at my job wasn't enough to keep it.But I knew my boss was right. They knew that when they hired me,I had no experience in finance reporting, yet they took a chance on me.In meetings I usually contributed last, after I had heard everyone else's suggestions.I did it to show that I was a listener, but also to hide my fears. They liked the person who walked into the interview, and they didn't respect me when I hid that person from them.‎ ‎ "Don't leave before you leave."That advice is essential far women at all stages of our careers.Because we work so hard for success.we don't like to think that we hurt ourselves sometimes. But each of us must change when necessary. In trying to earn a full-time job,I “leaned back”in order not to show too much of myself or my lack of expertise(专门知识).I learned that the hard way wasn't the way to achieve our goals.‎ ‎25.Why was the author offered a job at the company at first?‎ A.She just got her master's degree in finance.‎ B.She greatly impressed her boss in her first month.‎ C.She had quite a lot of experience in finance reporting.‎ D.She showed her special financial talent while working there.‎ ‎26.During her next four months at the company, the author .‎ A.performed well enough to earn the team's respect B.didn't balance her graduate studies with work very well C.was a good listener and contributed a lat in the meetings D.was afraid to offer her ideas because of her lack of confidence .‎ ‎27.What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?‎ A.We should always keep up our enthusiasm at work. ‎ B.Expertise and experience are greatly valued in the workplace.‎ C.We should not shy away from sharing our ideas when working in a team.‎ D.It's unwise of women to show themselves off when taking part in teamwork.‎ C ‎ Are you sick of going to bed late and waking up tired? Then grab your hiking boots and a tent.A new study suggests that camping in the great outdoors for a couple of days can reset your body clock and help you get more sleep.‎ ‎ The body clock is an internal system that tells our bodies when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up.Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin(褪黑激素)circulating in a person's blood at any given time.‎ ‎ In a healthy sleeper, melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night, and then settle back down when it's tune to wake up.‎ ‎ In our modern society, however, most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in many hours after sunrise if we could. And the trouble is,your melatonin levels may still he high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to fatigue. It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes(糖尿病),overweight and heart disease.‎ ‎ Professor Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado in the US wanted to see if our body clocks can be reset by a short stay in nature. His team recruited(招募)fourteen physically active volunteers in their 20s and 30s.Nine went on a weekend camping trip, while the other five stayed home.At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers' body clocks had shifted so that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip.By contrast, the body clocks of the group that stayed home shifted even later over the course of the weekend. .‎ ‎ "This tells us we can reset our clocks fast,"Wright said.‎ ‎ Therefore,if you want to change your sleep patterns you could try to increase your exposure to natural light during the day and decrease the amount of artificial light you see at night. And if that doesn't work, there's always camping.‎ ‎28.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?‎ A.To explain how a lack of sleep is bad for our health.‎ B.To inform us of a possible way to adjust the body clock.‎ C.To analyze how the body clock influences our sleeping habits.‎ D.To explore how the body clock is connected with melatonin levels.‎ ‎29.The underlined word “fatigue” in Paragraph 4 probably means " ".‎ A.tiredness B.excitement C.refreshment D.pressure ‎30.What did Wright's team discover from their experiment?‎ A.The body clocks of the two groups didn't show much difference.‎ B.The body clocks of those who stayed at home remained the same.‎ C.Those staying outdoors reset the clock inside their bodies over a short period.‎ D.Changes to the body clock don’t necessarily affect melatonin levels in our bodies.‎ ‎31.According to the passage,to change our sleeping habit,we'd better .‎ A.set an alarm clock to wake us up on time in the morning B.try to reduce melatonin levels as much as possible at night .‎ C.spend several weeks staying in the open air every now and then D.get exposed tn more natural light in the day but less artificial light at night D ‎ When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they're usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.‎ ‎ Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the canopy(树荫)of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren't any trees. With increased production come increased profits.‎ ‎ Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases the local wildlife habitat, because native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.‎ ‎ Furthermore,in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂)are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, and then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die.The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.‎ ‎ Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as"shade-grown"and"bird-friendly".Sure,these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet.I think it's worth it.‎ ‎32.Which opinion does the author agree with?‎ A.People should buy full-sun coffee. B.Shade-grown coffee should be supported.‎ C.Farmers should change the places to grow coffee. D.Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting.‎ ‎33.Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the full-sun method have?‎ A.It can protect the ecosystem. B.It can promote people's health.‎ C.It can provide mare nests for birds. D.It can increase the production of coffee.‎ ‎34.How do farmers get more land to grow full-sun coffee?‎ A.They cut down trees. B.They move to other countries.‎ C.They turn grassland into farmland. D.They buy more land from other farmers.‎ ‎35.What can we learn from the passage?‎ A.It is quite worthwhile to buy shade-grown coffee at any cost.‎ B.Farmers all have realized the importance of protecting the environment now.‎ C.South American farmers are taking action to plant coffee in the traditional way.‎ D.The full-sun method does good to the health of human beings in the long run.‎ 笫二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ What does travel consist of? Answers can be as varied as worrying about your budget, trying new dishes at meals, climbing mountains and riding on crowded local buses, etc. But to Mishana Khot,a US travel fanatic(狂热者), travel is "more than just a stamp in your passport-it's a stamp in your soul".On the travel website Vagabondish. com, Khot listed some ways that you will change after taking a trip. Now,please take a look.‎ u Travel shows the big picture.‎ ‎ Khot believes we may lose ourselves in our own lives from time to time. “Sometimes we can't separate our daily existence from the broader perspective(视角).”she argues.“ 36 It forces you to see your life from the outside.”‎ u ‎ 37 ‎ ‎ When you are on the way, chances are that you will deal with flight delays, slow buses, bad food, horrible accommodation and much more.As Khot pointed out,if there is one constant in a traveler's life,it is that travel will throw up situations that challenge you.You may have made the most detailed plan, but the next minute something just goes wrong. 38 ‎ u Travel makes you more grateful.‎ ‎ Whether you travel from a big city to a quiet countryside,or vice versa(反之亦然),there will come a moment when you are grateful for all you have."When you meet someone with one leg who is hiking up a hill, you will close your eyes for a second and say 'thank you'," she said.‎ u ‎ 39 ‎ ‎ During travel, you'll be forced to communicate with many more people than you're used to. 40 So,just throw away your shyness. That won't guide you to your destination.Go and communicate with people. They're an important part of the experience.‎ A.Travel makes you more adaptable.‎ B.Travel makes you more single-minded.‎ C.Travel helps you overcome your shyness.‎ D.You may meet something pleasant when you travel.‎ E.Travel provides a chance to get away from your routine.‎ F.And sometimes you won't even be able to use your first language.‎ G.You'll go through anger and disappointment, but hopefully, you'll learn to laugh at it and move ‎ on.‎ 笫三部分
