Runswick Bay, North Yorkshir It is a popular destination for rock poolers, walkers and hunters. Many of the homes are now holiday accommodations, linked by paths and walkways rather than streets. The Royal Hotel, at the heart of the village, offers homemade cakes and coffee alongside a simple but tasty bar menu and local Black Sheep bitter on draft. Stay in Castle House (sleeps six, three nights from £500) at the top of the village; has sweeping views of the bay from a comfortable window seat. South Shore, Brownsea Island, Dorset Reached by ferry from the moneyed shores of Sandbanks, Brownsea Island is a pocket of safe wilderness in Poole harbour. Famous for its red squirrel population and as the site of Baden-Powell’s first Scout camp, its mixture of woodland, wildland, and ponds suits a day of exploration and adventure. Push yourself into the sandy banks and enjoy views across the harbour in the company of various sea birds. Stay in National Trust-owned Custom House on the seaport (sleeps four, three nights from £622); offers a real Brownsea experience. Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs, Kent The lack of a convenient car park means that Kingsgate Bay, between Margate and Broadstairs, is quieter than other beaches on the Thanet coast. A short walk from the car park at neighboring Joss Bay (popular with surfers), however, will take you to this sheltered sandy bay with its sea caves. It is also a safe place to swim and canoe. American author Isaac Asimov, one of the greatest science-fiction writers of his age, had such a talent. Back in 1983, he was asked to predict how the world would look like in 2019. Now that we’re here, let’s see what he got right. On the role that computing would play in the future, he was amazingly accurate. Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Specifically, he said that “mobile computerized objects” would be an important part of everyday life. Here, he clearly foresaw our world of smartphones, tablets and other devices. He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. The International Space Station proves his prediction that we would not simply visit space but seek to stay there. How did Asimov develop his special sense of future developments? As a precocious boy, Asimov taught himself to read at the age of five. He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents’ candy store. His scientific interests gained sharper focus at Columbia University in New York. Asimov went to study chemistry, but became bored with pure laboratory science. Instead, he thought hard about the social significance of science. He wanted to communicate his ideas to the public. As an author, his books would feature the theme of social change caused by technology. Asimov had his finger on the pulse of both scientific and social change. He had a clear sight of what was coming around the corner for humanity in his works like the Galactic Empire series. “His predictions are absolutely fascinating,” Calum Chase, an English writer, told BBC News. “He was a genius.” 4. Which of the following has Asimov made a prediction about? ①computers②environment③tablets④space⑤pollution⑥smartphones A. ②⑤⑥ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①⑤⑥ 5. What do we know about Asimov? A. Recently scientists investigated this idea by testing 10000 men and women. They wanted to see if age affected a person’s ability to identify subtle facial emotions, such as fear and anger. The researchers used a Web-based platform to collect data. It showed the participants two headshots of random people. They were then asked to identify which subject was angrier, happier, or more fearful. The research found that younger people were able to better identify angry and fearful facial cues than older people. “We know from studies that the everyday experiences of an adolescent are different from an older person, but we wanted to understand how these experiences might be linked with differences in basic emotion understanding,” wrote Laura Germine, the study’s senior author. But what is it that makes young people more sensitive? “This is the exact age when young people are most sensitive to forms of negative social cues, such as bullying(欺凌),” Lauren Rutter, the study’s lead author, told Science Daily. “The normal development of anger sensitivity can contribute to some of the challenges that arise during this stage of development.” On the contrary, across the whole 10,000-person survey, researchers found no decrease in the sense of happiness among older participants and these findings fit well with other researches, showing that older adults tend to have more positive emotions. Now, the team is working toward a new study that examines how emotional sensitivity is related to different aspects of mental health, such as anxiety and depression. 8. What can we know from the passage? A. Older people are more allergic to social cues. B. The researchers gained data from the Internet. C. Older people are less likely to identify happiness in the research. D. Adolescents’ sensitivity to negative social cues does harm to their development. 9. How was the research carried out? A. By assuming and analyzing. B. By questioning and tracing. C. By reasoning and concluding. D. By surveying and collecting statistics. 10. What section of a newspaper is the passage probably taken from? A. Technology. B. Investigations. C. Education. D. Lifestyle. 11. What is the team planning to find out next? A. The relationship between emotions and experiences. B. The emotional differences between the young and the old. C. The connection between sensitivity of emotions and mental health. D. The different responses to social cues between the young and the old. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA, which is called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study. Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery. The first group of 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study. Each participant will receive a reward of about $18,500. The researchers are studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space, which will help astronauts in future missions. Apparently being in bed for a long time is similar enough to being in gravity-less space. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tilted(倾斜)down six degrees, much like conditions in space. Without gravity sending blood to the legs, astronauts’ heads are filled with fluids, resulting in “puffy-head, bird-legs” syndrome, according to the NASA website. Researchers will study how the shifts in fluid affect participants’ bodies, as well as possible bone and muscle loss. Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, reading or doing any other activities while lying down alone in bed to overcome the extreme boredom. Participants also need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight. During the study, they will spend 30 minutes a day in what is called a “short-arm human centrifuge(离心机)”, which produces artificial gravity and distributes fluids from the head back into the body. If interested in the project, you can apply and click here. 12. What do we know about the project of NASA? A. It will cost $18,500 in all. B. It is carried out in America. C. It is now seeking 12 men test subjects. D. It takes subjects three months to be in the project. 13. Which of the following statements is TURE? A. All the participants will be tested in space. B. The research is of little use to astronauts in future missions. C. Participants being tested are required to be fully concentrated. D. Shifts in fluid together with bone and muscle loss will be studied. 14. Who is the most likely to be accepted as a participant in the project? A. Kate, a teacher, obese. B. Jack, a teenager, healthy. C. Mary, in her thirties, athletic. D. Tom, a heavy smoker, knowledgeable. 15. What is the passage intended to do? A. To study “puffy-head, bird-legs” syndrome. B. To introduce a project of NASA to readers. C. To persuade women to participate in the project. D. To inform readers of the principles of centrifuge. 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. Who hasn’t felt the same way? ___16___ To overcome them, we spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, diet products, fashion and so on. Why do we care so much about how we look? Because it matters. Because beauty is powerful. Because even when we learn to value people mostly for being kind and wise and funny, we are still moved by beauty. No matter how much we argue against it, beauty has great influence on us. ___17___ Aristotle said, “Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction.” ___18___ We simply treat beautiful people better than we do others. Attach a photograph of a beautiful author to an essay, and people will think that it is more creative and more intelligently written than exactly the same essay accompanied by the photo of a homely author. Our sensitivity to physical beauty is not something we can control at will. ___19___ Experiments conducted by psychologist Judith J. Langlois showed that even small babies prefer to look at attractive faces. Before they have met a single super model, before they have watched a single TV show, before they have opened up a single fashion magazine, they are drawn to the same faces which adults have judged to be attractive. ___20___ Just as Nancy Etcoff says, “We have to understand beauty, or we will always be enslaved by it.” If you aim to be wise and kind and funny, it doesn’t mean that you can’t also try your best to look beautiful. There’s no reason to feel guilty about being moved by beauty’s power. It moves us all. A. We are born with it. B. It’s not fair, but it’s true. C. There is simply no escape. D. It actually does not make any sense. E. We are all proud of our achievements. F. We are all too aware of our physical imperfections. G. However, there are more important things in life than beauty. 【答案】16. F 17. C 18. B 19. A 20. G 【解析】 【分析】 这是一篇议论文。文章主要讲追求美是人的天性,外表的靓丽可以带来很多的好处。我们不要羞于表达自己对美的追求和向往。 【16题详解】 根据下句“To overcome them, we spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, diet products, fashion and so on.”(为了克服它们,我们每年会话很多钱在化妆品,减肥食品,时尚以及其它方面)可以推断出,前面一个句子应该是谈论不好的方面,所以才需要克服。故选F项。 【17题详解】 根据上句“No matter how much we argue against it, beauty has great influence on us. ”(无论我们如何攻击它,美已经对我们产生了很大影响)可知,前后句应该是转折关系,所以接下句“这是避无可避的”,语言上符合逻辑。故选C项。 【18题详解】 根据下文中举两个例子“我们总是对美的人更好一点;我们总是觉得漂亮作家的作品更具创作性”可知,前面应该提到“美真实而不公平的情况”来作为一个过渡句,起承上启下的作用,符合文章逻辑。故选B项。 【19题详解】 根据下文中的“Langlois showed that even small babies prefer to look at attractive faces.”(甚至婴儿都更喜欢看漂亮的脸蛋)可推断出,对于美的向往,人生而如此。故选A项。 My name is Margaret, and my story begins from here.
