My father is famous in our family for saying,"Take the extra minute to do it right." I always try to live by the "extra minute" rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents,I always thought about what I could do to avoid an "if only" moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter,or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I don't only avoid those "if only" moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid "if only" in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say "I love you" or "I forgive you." When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday,I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he's 84years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him.I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all. I know there will still be occasions when I have to say "if only" about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right,or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection,I know that I'm doing the right thing.I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.‎ ‎24.Which of the following is an example of the "extra minute" rule? ______ ‎ A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated. B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. D. Move an object out of the way before it trips(绊倒) someone.‎ ‎25.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______ .‎ A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor ‎ B. meet her father who was already an old ‎ man C. join in the holiday celebration of the company D. finish her work before the deadline approached ‎26.The underlined word "foregone" in Paragraph 3is closest in meaning to ______ .‎ A. abandoned B. lacked C. avoided D. wasted ‎27.What is the best title for the passage? ______ ‎ A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind.‎ C About 3 years earlier, a funny thing happened about China’s first female Nobel Prize winner, Tu Youyou, giving her acceptance speech in Sweden. When that speech reached her home country, two entirely different versions appeared, and the false one became a viral hit.‎ Guess which version is genuine? The one that matter-of-factly tells about the discovery of artemisinin(青蒿素), or the one with extreme literary style, complete with her father explaining the origin of her given name and poetic lines such as,“I like tranquility(宁静), tranquil as the leaves of sweet wormwood(青蒿); I avoid the spotlight, just as the petals of sweet wormwood do ; I aspire to be upright, as are the stems of sweet wormwood”.‎ Most readers were so touched by the literary version that they were left in tears. However, they just forgot that Tu is not a woman of letters, but one of science. It was totally made up by someone who obviously has great literary talent, but could not understand the inner life of a scientist.‎ I don’t know who made up the Tu speech, or for what purpose. It does not strike me as funny. Fortunately, no mainstream media seemed to have been fooled. Yet the false one has probably been shared more than the real one because it played up to the Chinese stereotype(固定形式)of what such a speech should be.‎ China’s cyberspace is full of educational and uplifting quotes, and quite a lot of them are made up. There is a joke that says the United States’ spying network collected and examined all the Internet data in China and found that the Chinese are addicted to such chicken soup, including that from untrustworthy sources.‎ ‎28.Most readers were touched by the false speech probably because of______.‎ A. Tu’s real life B. its writing style C. their understanding of science D. their passions for literature ‎29. About the literary version, which of the following is true?‎ A. It reflected Tu’s inner life. B.Its purpose was to get click rate.‎ C.It failed to attract the leading media. D.It’s about the discovery of artemisinin.‎ ‎30.What attitude does the writer seem to hold to the false speech?‎ A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.‎ ‎31. What’s the purpose of this article?‎ A. To prove that false news attracts more readers. ‎ B.To tell readers that the false speech is more literary.‎ C. To inform us that there is much false news on the Internet.‎ D.To warn readers that all Internet news are very untrustworthy.‎ D That people often experience trouble sleeping in a different bed in unfamiliar surroundings is a phenomenon known as the“first-night”effect. If a person stays in the same room the following night they tend to sleep more soundly. Yuka Sasaki and her colleagues at Brown University set out to investigate the origins of this effect.‎ Dr. Sasaki knew the“first-night”effect probably has something to do with how humans evolved. The puzzle was what benefit would be gained from it when performance might be affected the following day. She also knew from previous work conducted on birds and dolphins that these animals put half of their brains to sleep at a time so that they can rest while remaining watchful enough to avoid predators(捕食者). This led her to wonder if people might be doing the same thing. To take a closer look, the team studied 35 healthy people as they slept in the unfamiliar environment of the university's Department of Psychological Sciences. The participants each slept in the department for two nights and were carefully monitored with techniques that looked at the activity of their brains. Dr. Sasaki found, as expected, the participants ‎ slept less well on their first night than they did on their second, taking more than twice as long to fall asleep and sleeping less overall. During deep sleep, the participants' brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dolphins. On the first night only, the left hemispheres(半球) of their brains did not sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did.‎ Curious if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake to process information detected in the surrounding environment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix of regularly timed beeps(蜂鸣声) of the same tone and irregular beeps of a different tone during the night. She worked out that, if the left hemisphere was staying watchful to keep guard in a strange environment, then it would react to the irregular beeps by stirring people from sleep and would ignore the regularly timed ones. This is precisely what she found.‎ ‎32. What did researchers find puzzling about the“first-night”effect?‎ A. To what extent it can trouble people. B. What role it has played in evolution C. In what way it can be beneficial. D. What circumstances may set it off.‎ ‎33. What do we learn about Dr. Sasaki doing her research?‎ A. She found birds and dolphins remain watchful while asleep.‎ B. She found birds and dolphins sleep in much the same way.‎ C. She conducted studies on birds' and dolphins' sleeping patterns.‎ D. She got some idea from previous studies on birds and dolphins.‎ ‎34. What did Dr. Sasaki do when she first did her experiment?‎ A. She employed 35 participants from her Department of Psychological Sciences.‎ B. She monitored the brain activity of participants sleeping in a new environment.‎ C. She kept the participants awake.‎ D. She tested her findings about birds and dolphins on human subjects.‎ ‎35. What did Dr. Sasaki find about the participants in her experiment?‎ A. They tended to enjoy certain tones more than others.‎ B. They felt sleepy when exposed to regular beeps.‎ C. They tended to see irregular beeps as a threat.‎ D. They differed in their tolerance of irregular tones.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ You can read a book for pleasure one time through and be just fine. However, it is harmful to deal with academic reading the same way. In order to read and comprehend a book or article for school, you need to be much more strategic. 36_________‎ Understand genres and themes.‎ In most reading tests, the student is asked to read a passage and predict what might happen next. 37 _________This is to make sure you’re able to infer information from the clues. The type of text of a book helps you make predictions about the action—which helps you better understand the action.‎ Read with tools.‎ Any time you read to learn, use active reading skills and there are tools that are not so good to use. A pencil and a pack of sticky notes will be good tools. You can mark in the margins without any damage. Use your notes to write down thoughts, impressions, predictions, and questions as you read. 38 _________You create some serious damage when highlighting.‎ ‎39 __________‎ It's a no-brainer that you should take the time to identify and look up new and unfamiliar words as you read. But it's important to make a log book of those new words, and revisit them some time after you've finished reading that book. The more you study a subject, the more it sinks in.‎ Analyze the title (and subtitles).‎ If you are wondering why I would mention the title last, I can assure you that there is a good reason. The title is often the last thing to be adjusted once a writer has finished writing. He/she may reflect on the true message or purpose and come up with a new title. 40_________‎ A.Find out the new words.‎ B.Work the vocabulary skills.‎ C.That is, if you want to earn a good grade!‎ D.A highlighter, on the other hand, can be a really bad tool.‎ E.What might happen next will help you a lot in reading?‎ F.Prediction is a common reading comprehension strategy.‎ G.It will be a clue to help you understand the message better.‎ 第II卷 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节, 满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分, 满分30分)‎ Every time I look at my parents or even think of them,I feel proud of them.I especially admire their 41 of our coming to Singapore.‎ Our native country was Yemen.Forced to 42 the war,we had to leave our home and all our 43 and go on a long boat journey to Singapore. When Christmas or Valentine’s Day 62 (come), youngsters will flood into bars, restaurants, or department stores to celebrate these festivals, but actually they don’t know much about Chinese traditional festivals.‎ The reason behind this social phenomenon is obvious: in a society controlled by ‎ mass media and consumerism, festivals and holidays from abroad 63 (identify) as fashionable and new, while traditional ones are usually something out of date and old. Young people all over the world have regarded western life style, 64 (especial) the life in Hollywood films, 65 their goal of life. As a consequence, 66 is no wonder that Chinese young people have much more affection for Christmas than China’s Spring Festival.‎ We should think about the influence of such 67 social phenomenon carefully. It is obvious that the wide spread and recognition of western holidays is 68 (harm) to our traditional value. If we don’t take some 69 (measure) right now, some day in the future, Chinese cultural heritage may be strange to our grandchildren. It is high time that the government and all people 70 (take) action to protect our traditional culture.‎ 第四部分 写作( 共两节,满分35分)‎ 第一节 短文改错(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)‎ 文中共有10处错误,每句中最多有两处。 ‎ ‎ Last week, I along with my classmates was asked to attend a lecture, the theme of what was environmental protection.
