However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner. Born in September, 1897 , Irene Curie was the first of the Curies' two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévignéin Paris. Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities (设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military Medal by the French government. In 1918, Irene became her mother's assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in loveand were married in 1926.Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later. Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity (辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17,1956. 21.Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal? A. Because she received a degree in mathematics. B.Because she contributed to saving the wounded. C. Because she won the Nobel Prize with Frederic. D. Because she worked as a helper to her mother. 22. When was the second child of Irene and Frederic Joliot born? A. In 1932. B. In 1927. C. In1987. D. In 1926. 23. In which aspect was Irene Curie different from her mother? A. Irene worked with radioactivity. B. Irene combined family and career. C. Irene won the Nobel Prize once. D. Irene died from leukemia. B Today, we are told that children don't spend enough time in the fresh air. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV--they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature. But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some "wild time". They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, rummaging for conkers and playing hide-and-seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park. Children often need a helping hand from Mum and Dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from the National Health Service says, "We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids' development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go." So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing "nature's playground" is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says," We need to make more space for wild time in children's daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted.” This might sound a bit old-fashioned to you or maybe, like me, it makes you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood. There's no age limit on-enjoying yourself! 24. What is the best title of the text? A. Benefits of wild time B. Wild time for children C. More space for children D. Adventures for children 25.Children are encouraged to do the following activities except_____. A. building dens B. climbing trees C. playing hide-and-seek D. watching TV 26.What's the main idea of Paragraph 4? A. Modern children need wild time. B. The present world is complicated. C. Adults value outdoor activities. D. Parents like keeping their children indoors. 27.The last paragraph suggests that______. A. people like recalling the past B. it is out of date to go outdoors C. it is too late for adults to enjoy nature D. people at any age can enjoy wild time C It was a comfortable sunny Sunday. I was going to meet an old university friend I hadn't seen for years ,and was really excited to hear all his news. My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem- I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But... where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I’d left it at home. No mobile phone. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don't have my phone with me. In fact, I know I'm not alone: two thirds of us experience "nomophobia'' , the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. That's according to a study from 2012 which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones. It says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, that women are more "nomophobia" than men, and that 18-24-year-olds are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles.77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes. Do you have nomophobia? l You never turn your phone off. l You obsessively check for texts, missed calls and emails. l You always take your phone to the bathroom with you. l You never let the battery run out. It's funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businessmen carrying their large, plastic "bricks". Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. A UN study from this year said mobile phone subscriptions would outnumber people across the world by the end of 2014. And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it's time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you? So, what happened to my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said, "You haven't changed at all--still always late!" And we spent a great afternoon chatting, full of jokes and stories, with no interruptions and no nagging( 难以摆脱的) desire to check my phone. Not having it with me, I felt strangely liberating. Maybe I'll leave it at home on purpose next time. 28.What does the passage talk about? A. The history of mobiles. B. The story of meeting an old university friend. C. The introduction to mobile phones. D. The terrible feeling of being without mobiles. 29.The underlined phrase "on edge" in the third paragraph probably means . A. nervous B. energetic C. crazy D. surprised 30.According to the passage, who is most likely to be addicted to mobiles? A. A successful man. B. A 21-year-old girl. C. A 21-year-old boy. D. A lonely middle-aged person. 31.What's the author's attitude towards using mobiles? A. Neutral. B. Favorable. C. Worried. D. Critical. D When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力)and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家)who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them." Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activities scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, dependence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They help him understand that people must cooperate; and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work." 32.What do we know about John? A. He enjoyed his career and marriage.B. He had few childhood playmate. C. He received little love from his family. D. He was envied by others in hischildhood. 33.Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as . A. a description of personal values and social values B. an analysis of how work was related to competence C. an example for parents’ expectation of their children D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men 34.Vaillant's team obtained their findings by ______. A. recording the boys' effort in schoolB. evaluating the men’s mental health C. comparing different sets of scores D. measuring the men’s problem-solving ability 35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Competent adults know more about love than work. B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life. C. Love brings more joy to people than work does. D. Independence is the key to one's success. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Today, looking beautiful is something that many girls have to do.
