Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and handheld games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.‎ Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.‎ ‎“Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their child is going to read ,” said Norris. “It is turning children off.”‎ The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American booksellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books.‎ ‎ One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a bookseller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. “Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks them what they like to read, we have found that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer they would give alone,” said Norris.‎ Norris’s another tip for parents is that they do not attempt to limit books to one age range. “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for ‎ a child. If a book has caught their attention, then let them take it.” Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. “My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young and I have never read another Clancy since,” said Norris.‎ ‎24.What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?‎ A.Children’s interest in handheld games.‎ B.The declining market of the book industry.‎ C. The growing popularity of online entertainment.‎ D. Parents’ influence on children’s book selection.‎ ‎25.What do we learn about the new study?‎ ‎ A.It’s published to improve book sales.‎ ‎ B.It mainly focuses on British families.‎ ‎ C.It involves many years’ efforts.‎ ‎ D.It was conducted by Norris.‎ ‎26.What should parents do to help kids get their favorite books at bookstores?‎ ‎ A.Introduce new books regularly.‎ ‎ B.Let them talk with booksellers alone.‎ ‎ C.Discuss popular books with children.‎ ‎ D.Often seek expert advice from book sellers.‎ ‎27.What did Norris think of his father’s act?‎ ‎ A. It aroused his interest in reading.‎ ‎ B. It was quite necessary.‎ ‎ C. It was totally wrong.‎ D.It showed parents’ worries about kids.‎ C As any plane passenger will confirm, a crying baby is almost impossible to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Now scientists believe they may have worked out why. A baby’s cry pulls at the heartstrings(扣人心弦)in a way while other cries don’t, researchers found.‎ Researchers found that a baby’s cry can trigger unique emotional responses in the brain, making it impossible for us to ignore them—whether we are parents or not. Other types of cries, including calls of animals in great pain, fail to get the same response…suggesting the brain is programmed to respond specifically to a baby’s cry.‎ A team of Oxford University scientists scanned the brains of 28 men and women as they listened to a variety of calls and cries. After 100 milliseconds --- roughly the time it takes to blink (眨眼) —two parts of the brain that respond to emotion lit up. Their response to a baby’s cry was particularly strong. The response was seen in both men and women—even if they had no children.‎ Researcher Dr Christine Parsons said, “You might read that men should just notice a baby and step over it and not see it, but it’s not true. There is a special processing in men and women, which makes sense from an evolutionary(演化的)view that both men and women would be responding to these cries.” The study was in people who were not parents, yet they are all responding at 100ms to these particular cries, so this might be a fundamental response present in all of us regardless of parental status.‎ Fellow researcher Katie Young said it may take a bit longer for someone to recognize their own child’s cries because they need to do more “fine-grained analysis”. The team had previously found ‎ that our reactions speed up when we hear a baby crying. Adults performed better on computer games when they heard the sound of a baby crying than after they heard recordings of adults crying.‎ ‎28. A baby’s cry is difficult to ignore because it .‎ A. keeps on crying B. makes people feel strong emotions C. causes people great pain D. cries harder than adults ‎ ‎29. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”‎ A. remove B. cause C. avoid D. cure ‎30. What may Christine Parsons agree to?‎ A. A crying baby makes no sense to people without children.‎ B. Almost everyone makes certain response to a baby’s cry.‎ C.Men pay less attention to a crying baby than women.‎ D. Parents can hardly recognize their own babies’ cries.‎ ‎31. What’s the main idea of the text?‎ A. Why you can’t get a baby’s cry out of your head.‎ B. How to recognize different babies’ cries.‎ C. Why a baby is easy and likely to cry.‎ D. How to prevent a baby crying.‎ D In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).‎ One tactic involves where to display the goods. Foe example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food(垃圾食品)later in their trip. In department stores, shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妆品) section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over cosmetics they might want to try later. ‎ Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up.‎ When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decision in the first few second upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.‎ ‎32. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?‎ A. To save customers times.‎ B. To show they are high quality foods.‎ C. To sell them at discount prices.‎ D. To help sell junk food.‎ ‎33. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?‎ A. Opening the store early in the morning.‎ B. Displaying British wines next to French ones.‎ C. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.‎ D. Inviting customers to play music. ‎ ‎34. What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?‎ A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.‎ B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.‎ C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.‎ D. A good first impression increases sales.‎ ‎35. What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.‎ B. To introduces how businesses have grown from the past.‎ C. To report researches on customer behavior.‎ D. To show dishonest business practices.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Do you know how to deal with failure at school? Four steps will help you get the most out of each failure and more on.‎ ‎ 36   When you feel bad after failing, talk with your parents or good friends, or any other adult. Then decide to take the duty to improve yourself. Read the teachers’ comments on your test carefully.‎ Ask yourself what you were trying to do and why you failed.    37   Maybe you didn’t have all the information you needed; maybe you made a mistake or a poor decision. If so, give yourself a pat on the back. Fewer people ever get something right the first time they try it, and often it takes them many times.    38    Sometimes the failure isn’t because of something you did or didn’t do; it is someone else’s fault. But don’t spend time blaming them; instead, move on toward your goals.‎ ‎  39    . Review the situation to see what your choices are. There is a different between making a decision and giving up. Deciding to follow a better way is one thing; simply walking away means you really have failed.‎ Keep trying again. Successful people are different because they choose their next steps instead of just reacting to feelings. If a goal still important to you, figure out what to do and go after it again.   40   .‎ A. Don’t give up easily B. Failure is unavoidable C. Remove your bad feelings D. If it isn’t, do your best on something else E. Actually it was because you were very lazy F. Usually it was because you were trying out a new skill or learning a new subject. G.
