Boston Children’s Museum Location: Massachusetts The exhibits here are of health, art, science, culture and environmental awareness. In this museum, children also learn about Japanese culture and house of silk merchant. Activities like Play Lab, New Balance Climb and The Recycle Shop bring out the creativity in children. Children’s Museum of Houston Termed as the best playground for mind, this museum offers scores of activities for kids of every age. Children also learn about broadcasting activities and preserving ecosystems.zx.x.k Minnesota Children’s Museum Location: Minnesota This museum is located at St. Paul’s and kids find themselves immersed in a world of smart play. Here activities like exploring natural habitats of animals are undertaken. Kids also paint their faces, play with finger puppets and at the same time, appreciate learning forms. These museums have surely taken us down to the memory lane where we once went and explored, laughed and enjoyed our trip. These creative institutions are a best way to instill learning ideas, crate experiences and develop little curious minds. Active learning takes place when the minds are engaged. These children centered institutions rightly cater to the needs of the young ones. 1.Where is Boston Children’s Museum located? A. In Texas B. In Alaska C. In Massachusetts D. In Minnesota 2.Where should you go to let your kids explore natural habitats of animals? A. Boston Children’s Museum B. Minnesota Children’s Museum C. Museum for American Children D. Children’s Museum of Houston 3.Who is the text mainly written for? A. School children B. Sports lovers C. School teachers D. Parents with small kids B Lloyd asked the other day whether we should show more big green houses on TreeHugger. After all, while we may like to talk about living simply as an alternative American Dream and tiny homes being the next big thing, it seems likely that many folks — particularly in America — will continue to see increased square meters as an indicator of quality of life. In fact, the much advertised recession-driven(萧条引起的)shift to smaller houses may not be happening at all. Listening to NPR’s Marketplace Money this weekend, I was struck by a report that claimed that the era of McMansions is by no means over. While increased energy costs have, to a degree, made people learn more about, and more interested in, energy efficiency, there is apparently little evidence to suggest that this has translated into a desire for smaller homes — which finally would be the biggest step toward energy efficient housing we could take. Steven East, an analyst for Ticonderoga Securities, put it in pretty plain terms: "There has been a lot of talk in the press that the McMansion is dead and consumers are now permanently wanting smaller homes, etc. There’s nothing in our research that indicates that’s the truth." Some people may be happy in their tiny apartment, but I guess this is just one more reminder that activism beats prophecy (预言), and wishful thinking is not a strategy. If we TreeHuggers want to encourage people to live in smaller houses, we need to find ways to make it an attractive and convincing suggestion. Not hope that the recession or high energy prices do the job for us. 4.How is life quality measured by many Americans? A. The size of houses. B. The style of living. C. The income of the family. D. The increase of energy prices. 5.What do some people think makes consumers want tiny homes? A. The alternative American Dream. B. Much advertised smaller houses. C. Slightly decreased energy costs. D. Awareness of energy efficiency. 6.What can we conclude from Steven East’s words? A. Consumers are likely to follow suit. B. What the press tells is not a little true. C. The press can guide consumption. D. People still long for big homes. 7.Which would be the best title of the text? A. Tiny Apartments Are the Next Big Thing B. Ways to Make Smaller Homes Attractive C. The McMansion Time Is Not Over Yet D. The New Standard of Quality of Life C As we all know, behavior and words sometimes are interpreted differently in some countries or areas, which is generally called cultural differences. For example: Shaking the head in a horizontal direction in most countries means "no", while in India it means "yes". Showing the thumb held upwards means in Latin America, especially Brazil, and in many other countries, including China, everything is "OK", while it is understood in some Islamic countries as well as Sardinia and Greece as a rude sign. Laughing is connected in most countries with happiness — in Japan it is often a sign of confusion, insecureness and embarrassment. In the UK and Ireland, the word "compromise" has a positive meaning(an agreement where both parties win something); in the USA it may rather have negative meanings (both parties lose something). In Mediterranean European countries, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, it is normal, or at least widely tolerated, to arrive half an hour late for a dinner invitation, but in Germany and Switzerland this would be extremely rude. If invited to dinner, in many Asian countries and Central America, it is well-mannered to leave right after the dinner: the ones who don’t leave may indicate they have not eaten enough. In the Indian subcontinent, European and North American countries this is considered rude, indicating that the guests only wanted to eat but wouldn’t enjoy the hosts’ company. In Africa, saying to a female friend who you haven’t seen for a while that she has put on weight means she is physically healthier than before or had a nice holiday, while this would be considered as an insult(侮辱) in Europe, North America and Australia. 8.Where does "showing the thumb held upwards" have a bad meaning? A. In Greece. B. In Mexico. C. In China. D. In Brazil. 9.What behavior may be avoided in the USA? A. Arrive half an hour late for dinner. B. Have food left on the plate. C. Leave right after the dinner. D. Eat up the food immediately. 10.What is special about Africa? A. You can express your puzzlement by laughing. B. You can praise women for their gaining weight. C. "Compromise" has a positive meaning. D. Shaking the head means "yes". 11.What is the best title for the text? A. Strange behavior in some countries B. Customs are different in different countries C. Some typical examples of cultural differences D. Cultural values should be paid much attention to D It’s been a good week for new parents: Since Tuesday, three major corporations have changed their parental leave policies to reduce pressure on employees struggling to balance work and life with a new baby. The new program, which will take effect in November, offers up to 16 weeks of fully paid leave to primary caregivers and 10 weeks of medical leave for childbirth, totaling 26 weeks for a birth mother who is her child’s primary caregiver. According to The Wall Street Journal, non-primary caregivers will receive up to 14 weeks of paid leave. "In the US, government mandates(命令) for paid leave are currently slim to nonexistent," Ms. Morris said. "That means companies must seek the tough balance between supporting employees during major life events and meeting business goals. Too often, employees have not had the support they need." Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics say only 13 percent of full-time workers in the United States had access to paid family leave in 2012. Willis Towers Watson benefits consultant Mary Tavarozzi told Reuters paid leave for American mothers usually lasts around a month. According to The New York Times, the United States is the only high-income country that does not have nationally mandated paid family leave. In contrast, workers in Britain are given up to 50 weeks of family leave, 37 weeks of which is paid. Barack Obama has talked about closing this gap between the United States and its peers, The Times reported. In December, he began giving federal employees six weeks of paid family leave following the birth of a child. "It’s time we stopped treating childcare as a side issue or a women’s issue, and treated it like the national economic priority(优先事项) that it is," he said in his State of the Union address in January. Some studies have shown that the benefits of paid parental leave are tangible(实际的) beyond the relief new parents experience at being able to focus on their children without worrying about money. 12.Why is it a good week for new parents? A. The cost they paid will be shared. B. Longer periods of parental leave are expected. C. The policy benefiting them takes effect. D. Employees’ working time is becoming shorter. 13.What did Ms. Morris say about the US’s present paid leave? A. It’s well carried out. B. It’s supported by employers. C. Few employees really get the benefits. D. It increases the cost of the companies. 14.What can we infer from Obama’s words? A. Women can perform as well as men. B. Childcare should be taken more seriously than the economy. C. Working conditions for women are worsening. D. The importance of paid family leave was once ignored. 15.What may be discussed in the following paragraphs? A. People’s reactions to Obama’s decision. B. Reasons for a paid family leave program. C. Other advantages of a paid family leave program. D. The gap between the US and other countries. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Hollywood Works to Eliminate Gender Pay Gap When actors receive their Academy Award—known as the Oscar—they often thank their producer, director, family members and even their agent. Last February, Patricia Arquette won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the film “Boyhood”. 16 “It is our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” Arquette was talking about a socio-political issue in America. For every dollar a man earns, women are paid around 77 cents. Patricia Arquette is one of the actors trying to get the Hollywood gender pay gap eliminated. This issue is called the gender pay gap. 17 The magazine named actress Jennifer Lawrence as the top-paid actress. She earned $52 million in 2015. Scarlett Johannson came in second at $35.5 million. There is no question about the wealth of these actresses. 18 According to Forbes, only four actresses earned more than $20 million. Twenty-one actors, on the other hand, made at least that much. Overall, top actors like Robert Downey, Jr. and Jackie Chan earn hundreds of millions of dollars more than Hollywood's top actresses. 19 It tends to be an issue throughout the workforce. The American Association of University Women studied the pay gap earlier this year. The organization used the American Community Survey. 20 The most recent data from the survey came out in 2014. It showed men earn about 21-percent more than women in all industries. Thanks to Arquette and other women, Hollywood celebrities are talking about pay inequality. A. This isn't a problem only in the movie business. B. She used her moment on stage to call attention to pay inequality in Hollywood. C. Forbes magazine talked about how famous each Oscar actress is. D. But the question is: Should they be richer? E. The survey asks questions about the cost of living in the United States. F. They deserve the money for their hard work. G. Forbes magazine listed how much Hollywood actresses earn every year. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) Volunteering abroad comes with a bit of a social stigma(耻辱). A variety of trips led by our language teachers to different shows, , street festivals, and other cultural events. We can go on exciting visit to museums, relax in the nearby park or to the theater. There are also trips at the weekend to Washington D.C., the Niagara Falls and Boston. In addition, every Friday the school offers free additional courses are open to all the students. Different themes related to culture are addressed. These activities help us improve our English, give us an opportunity to meet friendly people from around the world. 注意A variety of trips为复数,所以led前加are。 第二处考查名词单复数,根据语境可知,此处的club为名词,意为"俱乐部,社团",所以应用名词的复数形式表示泛指。由文中的shows, street festivals和other cultural events也可知,此处用名词的复数形式。 Dear Tom, I’ve finally made my decision to go to America for further study after graduating from high school. I’ve been longing to go to America, mainly for two reasons. One is that I can experience American culture, which is quite different from that of my country. The other is that I can broaden my horizons in this developed country. But to tell the truth, I am faced with some challenges. I don’t have a good command of English, especially spoken English, so I’m afraid I’ll have difficulty fitting in very soon. Besides, I have the pressure from my lessons, which I don’t know how to handle. With so many things bothering me, I hope you can offer me some practical advice. Looking forward to your reply.
