Failure can also 24 create fame, just like William Hung, 24, a native of Hong Kong. Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled “The True Idol” on April 6. The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” on the television show “American Idol 3”, on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act. Hung’s response? “I already gave my best, so I have no regrets at all.” That’s good, because any common person would have found plenty to regret: The off-key singing. The blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high. The terrible dancing. The hips jerking (摇摆) to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad. But, it was this very bad act that sold well. Marc Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: “Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That’s what William did and immediately won the hearts of America.” Whatever it is, for the moment it’s big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno-music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station. So, what does Hung think of this? “There were all these people saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn’t have much respect for me and some were kind of mean.” 56. What is the best title of this passage? A. B A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate (调查)the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000. As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV. Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio, etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use. The study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities that could help prevent depression. Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active to read, to attend religious services and to vote. 61. We can learn from the survey that of all the media use . We can conclude that a teenager should . According to the passage, what kind of activity may help prevent depression? A. Watching movies. B. Taking part in sports. C. Listening to the radio. D. Playing computer games. 65. It all started when Graham Broad, a professor at the University of Western Ontario, found McKay’s name in a footnote in a book about university history. McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友) who had served during the First World War, but his name was unfamiliar to Broad, a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity, Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆) in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged, he finally gave up. On his way out, Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture, he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find, Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually, a picture came into view. Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron (中队) as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.” Yet, in a letter home, McKay refused to take credit, saying that 24 Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane. McKay’s war records were destroyed during a World War II air bombing on London — an explanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students, a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in November 2007. “I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word ‘deceased’ (阵亡) next to his name,” said Corey Everrett, a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us, but instead of finishing his time at Western, he chose to fight and die for his country.” 71. What made Professor Broad continue his search for more information on McKay? A. A uniform of McKay. B. A footnote about McKay. C. A book on McKay. D. A picture of McKay. 72. What did the students find out about McKay? A. He trained pilots for some time. B. He lived longer than other pilots. C. He died in the Second World War. D. He was downed by the pilot Boelcke. 73. Lifelong learning systems are considered national policies in some countries. Its 700 million laborers have to improve their skills and continue their education. Rapid changes in the economic structure have _______ unemployment, making training a key concern for jobless people looking to get reemployed. China has a large population but still lacks human resources. Turning the burden of a huge population into an advantage into an advantage for human resources will benefit economic growth and help it gain international competitiveness in the age of the knowledge-driven economy. China is now undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization. In the past three decades, about half of its agricultural laborers have transferred to non-agricultural sectors. The country must set up an effective training system to rapidly improve the quality of laborers. Meanwhile, China is aging far faster than the rest of the world. The results are as follows. 75% of the students say they are not happy at all during the summer holidays. They have private 24 teachers at home, or attend various training courses. They are very tired. Another 18% say they are happy, because they spend their holidays at their grandparents' house and have a good chance to make new friends. However, 7% feel lonely and bored, for they are not allowed to spend time with their friends, so they play the computer games and watch TV at home. I think the parents should trust their children and give them more freedom to arrange their own time. At the same time, they should encourage children to take part in more social experience to make their holidays more colorful and communicate with their friends. 听力录音材料 第一节: 1. M:It’s so hot today. Inside the car were two young girls on the passenger seat-but no driver.
