When WABC asked Freed to sign a statement swearing that he had never taken bribes, he refused and was fired. Although he later signed such a statement for WNEW-TV, he lost his television show as well. ‎ Finding himself unwelcome in New York, Freed fled to the West Coast, where he managed to land a daytime disc jockey (流行音乐播音员) job at KDAY in Los Angeles in 1960. Legal problems continued to bother him, though, and he was charged with taking bribes of more than $30,000 from a number of record companies. Publicly, Freed denied that he had ever accepted direct bribes, although he acknowledged that he had accepted gifts from record companies, but only for playing records that he was certain would become hits anyway. After a short time at KDAY, he left when the station management refused to let him promote his live rock ‘n’ roll shows. He returned to New York, but not as a broadcaster. At the height of the great enthusiasm for the twist dance, he hosted a Manhattan twist revue (时事讽刺剧), but when this enthusiasm cooled, he found a disc jockey job at WQAM in Miami in 1962. During this difficult period, Freed began drinking heavily and lost his job in Miami after only two months. In December of 1962 he was found guilty in New York of two charges of commercial bribery and was given a six-month sentence and fined $300.‎ ‎ This effectively ended his career.‎ Freed spent the last years of his life in Palm Springs‎, ‎California. Although he had redefined what it meant to be a disc jockey and named the music that had become an anthem (圣歌) for the world’s youth, he was a disgraced (耻辱的) and broken man, no longer able to work in the business he loved. On January 20, 1965, he died in a hospital in Palm Springs.‎ ‎5. Why was Freed fired by WABC?‎ A. Because he took bribes.‎ B. Because he swore he didn’t take bribes.‎ C. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Freed didn’t take bribes at all.‎ B. Freed showed no talent for music.‎ C. Freed had made contributions in his career.‎ D. KDAY fired Freed because of his addiction to alcohol.‎ C All forms of tobacco — cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco — are dangerous. It doesn't help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes.‎ ‎ The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn't always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as “I just don't like it” or “I want to stay in shape for soccer (or football, basketball or other sport)”.‎ ‎ The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped evidently. Today, about 23% of high school students smoke.‎ ‎ If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. Others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations like the American Cancer Society. The Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.‎ ‎ When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don't give up. Some people find they have a few setbacks before they manage to quit for good.‎ ‎ Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything — more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!‎ ‎8. What will be the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A.Live a long life ‎ B.Staying smoke free ‎ C.The smoking problems ‎ D.The good news for smokers ‎9. What makes it difficult to keep away from smoking?‎ ‎ A.Sports activities.‎ ‎ B.Finding no reasons.‎ ‎ C.Cigarettes offered around you.‎ ‎ D.The pressure from your work.‎ ‎10. How can you effectively quit smoking?‎ ‎ A.Walking slowly.‎ ‎ B.Eating cold turkey.‎ ‎ C.Staying in hospital.‎ ‎ D.Finding a suitable approach.‎ ‎11. We can conclude that after stopping smoking you will ________.‎ ‎ A.have no cancer ‎ B.be more attractive ‎ C.run for a long time ‎ D.get more opportunities D Camille Mahlknecht, 9, has some big fun planned for this weekend. She and other residents of Agoura Hills‎, ‎California, plan to pick up trash during their city’s annual cleanup. At the same time, Wissam Raed,12, will be busy volunteering too. Thousands of miles away in Lebanon, Wissam plans to put on a play at an orphanage and bring potted plants to elderly people at a senior citizen center.‎ Some other children like Nathan White, 10, have personal reasons for volunteering. Nathan’s grandmother died of a heart attack. To help raise money for medical research, Nathan participated in Jump Rope for Heart. He and five other boys took turns jumping rope for two and half hours and collected more than US$‎1200 in donations for the American Heart Association.‎ Millions of children around the globe lend a hand to their communities every year. Schools and parents also contribute to the rise in youth service. For example, many schools offer community service activities for students to join. Teachers either combine volunteer work with classroom lessons or make service work a requirement. Parents, on the other hand, encourage their kids to volunteer and do it with them.‎ Community service is particularly important in this depression time. As the need for monetary support and other aid has increased, many charitable organizations have experienced a significant drop in donations. Camille and other children who volunteer thousands of hours annually can fill in some of the gaps.‎ According to research, kids who start volunteering are twice as likely to continue doing good deeds when they are adults. So, grab a paintbrush, a trash bag, or whatever you need to help your community. You’ll love how you feel after helping others. Even dirty work can be lots of fun, if it’s for a good cause.‎ ‎12.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?‎ A.To recommend youth service programs to schools.‎ B.To ask charity organizations to serve the community.‎ C.To urge children to take part in volunteering activities.‎ D.To propose alternatives for doing community services.‎ ‎13.What is the main idea of the 3rd paragraph?‎ A.Community service is gaining popularity among children.‎ B.Families and schools help to make community service popular.‎ C.Children now depend more on their teachers than on their parents.‎ D.Nathan White had a special reason to raise money for medical research.‎ ‎14.Why is community service important in a time of depression?‎ A.It raises money for school activities.‎ B.It teaches children to take care of the sick.‎ C.It gives charity organizations some needed help.‎ D. It encourages parents and teachers to work together.‎ ‎15.What can be inferred from the passage?‎ A.Community service can help prevent juvenile delinquency(青少年犯罪).‎ B.Children will probably leave school and work as volunteers.‎ C.Organizing sports events for the school is a kind of community service.‎ D.Children who do volunteer work are more likely to grow up to be caring adults.‎ II. 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。(E涂AB, F涂CD, G涂ABC)‎ Cycling is a good form of sports, here are some tips on how to do it safely and comfortably.‎ ‎___16___ .Pushing with the wrong part of the foot can raise your risk of developing a painful injury of the heel, says Rob Werstine, a sports physiotherapist (理疗师)and board member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
