He was a quiet child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass. The child was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction — the north. He asked his father and his uncle what caused the needle to move. Albert did not like school. The German schools of that time were not pleasant. Students could not ask questions. Albert said he felt as if he were in prison. In 1905, Albert Einstein published some important papers in a German scientific magazine. They included one of the most important scientific documents in history. It explained what came to be called his “Special Theory of Relativity”. Ten years later, he expanded it to a “General Theory of Relativity”. In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was given to him not for his theories of relativity, but for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect. Albert Einstein left Germany when Adolph Hitler came to power in 1933. He moved to the United States to continue his research. Einstein became a citizen of the United States in 1940. Einstein was a famous man, but you would not have known that by looking at him. His white hair was long and wild. He wore old clothes. He showed an inner joy when he was playing his violin or talking about his work. Students and friends said he had a way of explaining difficult ideas using images that were easy to understand. Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life working on what he called a “unified field theory”. He hoped to find a common mathematical statement that could tie together all the different parts of physics. He did not succeed. Albert Einstein died in 1955 at the age of seventy-six. 5. What can we learn about Albert Einstein in his childhood according to the passage? A. He was quite clever and smart. B. He was curious about new things. C. He hated talking with others. D. The life story of Albert Einstein. D. How Albert Einstein won success. C Last Thursday, Michael and Linda stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to 4,000 homeless people for their wedding reception on the border town of Kilis. The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional feast reception, they would feed the victims from an earthquake-stricken area. The idea came from the bridegroom’s father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people who have suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day. Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won over. When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients(接受者). On Tuesday evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. “It’s like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis or sharing something with people who don’t even have the most basic things,” Michael said. “Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need.” 8.Why was there so many homeless people in Kilis? A. To attend Michael and Linda’s wedding. B. To support the organization. C. To escape the damaging earthquake. D. To help distribute free daily meals. 9. How did the couple celebrate their wedding? A. They treated their friends and relatives to a big dinner. B. They afforded the entire cost of the day for feeding victims. C. They shared their happiness with the relatives in Kilis. D. They took photos with the grateful victims. 10.What does the underlined word “approached” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. took in B. moved to C. came across D. consulted with 11.We can know from the text that __________________.. A. Kilis is a place which lies in southeastern Turkey B. Ted was a representative of the organization C. Linda adopted the suggestion immediately she heard it D. Michael doubted if more new couples would follow him D English songs have been very popular for people around the world for many decades. Songs from Elvis Presley to Ricky Martin, from the Beatles to Eminem and from Natalie Cole to Britney Spears have all been enjoyed by people around the world, even for people who don’t speak English, and even for people who don’t speak English. From my experience, some people listen to English songs for 20-30 years but still don’t achieve any good English skills. Some people choose English songs to be their main learning method, but most of them fail. Listening to English songs does not help you to speak English fluently. It does help you gain some vocabulary, but most of these words are unusual ones that you don’t use in everyday life. You won’t learn the sentence “It is a difficult project. We really need to meet the deadline.” in any English songs. All you will hear are love, passion, infection, hate and blue, for the feeling, not the color. People like using English songs to practice English skills because it’s easy and enjoyable. They think that sitting in the car listening to English songs day after day will improve their English skills. It actually will not. You will definitely not improve your listening skills because normal people don’t speak with a tune. People don’t talk like Eminem’s songs. You can’t get yourself familiar with English pronunciation or accent just from listening to English songs. The words that they pronounce in the songs are not the words that you will hear in your everyday life. They can even confuse you more about how English is pronounced. I would fully encourage you to watch English movies and listen to radio news or other normal talks, but not music. Of course, you can consume it for fun but not with the aim of improving your English skills. Having good English skills is not that easy. Remember you should work hard to improve your English step by step. 12. According to the passage, listening to English songs can help you _________. A. improve your English grammar B. speak English more fluently C. gain the skills of writing D. learn more new words 13. What can we learn about the words in English songs? A. Most of them are vivid and interesting. B. They are seldom used in people’s everyday life. C. English learners should learn more of them. D. They can help people improve their pronunciation. 14. It can be inferred from the passage that the writer may be _________. A. an experienced English learner B. a well-known pop singer C. a Chinese music fan D. an American teacher 15. The last paragraph is written mainly to _________. A. give us some advice on how to learn English B. encourage us to go to see more films C. tell us learning English is hard for everyone D. warn us not to listen to music in our daily life 第二节(共5小题 ;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Improve Your Study Habits Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. 16 Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here are some tips for you: Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. 17 It’s important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject. 18 Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says. Review regularly. 19 Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide more than grades. 20 A. Be volunteer to raise questions. B. Make good use of your time in class. C. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. D. Those who make the best of their time study with more ease. E.
