A month after I graduated from high school in August, 2007, I was coming home from swim practice in the training center of the city and was involved in a car accident. I was so seriously injured that I was in a coma for more than two months at Prince Georges Hospital. I suffered a lot from the experience of dying eight times during my coma and I couldn’t open my mouth to talk or to communicate when I eventually came around. At that time, it seemed that walking was never going to happen again due to all the extreme injuries. Just like my body, my dreams were completely destroyed. But I was not going to let my injuries stop me from realizing my dreams. After receiving a total of 15 operations and 36 blood transfusions, I had to make every great effort to learn to talk, eat, walk, shower, and live on my own again. When I was out of hospital, I still had to go to outpatient therapy in Waldorf, Maryland. After I spent a few months in a wheelchair, I took baby steps to walk on my own. It was a miracle that I was able to walk again, but I still wanted to prove that I could not only walk, but also run. When it came true, I wanted to get back into the pool again. After having a few lung rests, I was able to go in the pool a little bit each week. After a few months of swim training, I began my freshman year at St Mary’s College of Maryland and then became a proud member of the swim team. By telling my story, I want to make a positive influence on the world. I am just trying to live every day to the fullest and inspire other people never to give up their dreams no matter how bad a situation is to them. I remember when I was still in my hospital bed, I would have my mum and dad push me round in my wheelchair to the other rooms to see the other patients and chat with them and their family members. I wanted to let them know that everything was going to be okay. Somehow, things would work out for the best. 21.According to Paragraph 3, it can be inferred that the author________________. A.Actions Speak Louder than Words B.Attitude Is Everything C.A Good Beginning Is Half Done D.Everything Happens for a Reason B Lobsters(龙虾) can be found throughout the world’s oceans, with the exception of the north and south polar regions. Different types of lobster choose different areas to live. Many lobsters live in shallow water in the coastal areas around islands. One group of lobsters, called deep-sea lobsters, lives in the cold, deep sea. When it comes to predators(捕食者), humans have to be placed first on the list thanks to a multibillion dollar fishing industry. In the oceans lobsters face threats from a range of fish and sea mammals. Atlantic Cod Atlantic cod are found throughout the Atlantic Ocean at depths of between 200 and 440 feet. Small cod are primarily bottom feeders. Fully-grown cod will eat pretty much anything they can swallow whole including lobsters. Summer Flounder The summer flounder is a flat fish. What is unique about the fish is that both its eyes are on one side of its body. They stay close to the sea beds in the Atlantic waters off the coast of North America. They are effective predators that search for food on the sea floor. The flounder has sharp teeth capable of crushing(粉碎) small lobsters. Harbor Seals Found in Arctic and sub-arctic waters in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the harbor seals rest on sandy beaches and take to the water to hunt. Seals have a varied diet, eating a range of fish. They also eat lobsters. Wolffish The wolfish is found in coastal waters on both sides of the North Atlantic. It has a large mouth with sharp and long teeth. These teeth are specifically for eating hard-shelled animals. Lobsters are easy prey to the fish. 25.The first paragraph is mainly about_________________. A.the living habits of lobsters B.the types of lobsters C.the habitats of lobsters D.the features of lobsters 26.What is the main threat to lobsters? A.The wolffish. B.Human beings. D.It is able to crush any lobster easily. 28.According to the text, ___________ can eat hard-shelled animals easily. A.the summer flounder B.the wolffish C.the Atlantic cod D.the harbor seals C Last Wednesday night, I attended the event for the Blue Mind Symposium(讨论会), which brought scientists, artists, architects, engineers, sailors and many others together to explore the connections between the ocean and the human mind. The goal of the symposium is to use our collective brainpower to advance management of the sea. It doesn’t take a scientist to explain the deep emotional connection many of us feel to the sea. Ask any surfer, beach-goer, fisherman or diver and they will talk about the calm that comes over them out on the water or the hypnotic(催眠的) effect of waves crashing on the shore. We celebrate those connections annually on June 8, World Ocean Day. It’s a time to be grateful for all that the ocean provides, from food and jobs to clean air and the adventure of exploration. It’s also a time to check marine protection efforts. Around the world, people are paying more and more attention, and the Blue Mind Symposium is just one of a number of recent conferences that have brought leading thinkers in ocean protection together to share ideas. The 3rd annual Blue Vision Summit explored opportunities for everyday action on ocean protection, and the 2nd International Marine Conservation Congress focused on worldwide advances in adopting marine protected areas. Right now, just over 1% of our oceans are protected. That means many of the important nurseries for ocean wildlife have the risk of being damaged by a variety of pressures, from climate change to habitat destruction. Around the world, there have been major advances in ocean protection, from the 3,800-square-mile marine reserve created in Costa Rica to China’s first seven ocean parks. And, closer to home, networks of marine protected areas are in place and being monitored along half our coast. That’s cause for celebration, and for hope. 29.The Blue Mind Symposium___________________. D Canyonlands National Park Canyonlands National Park is a famous tourist attraction in Utah where visitors can see arches(拱门) and other beautiful rock formations. Canyonlands National Park is a wild, lonely area of rocks, rivers and desert plants. Only Native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in1964. Even today, it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of dirt. Driving requires a special vehicle. The National Park Service says Canyonlands National Park is wild America. Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations. At the center of the park are two deep canyons carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park. One of these areas is called the Maze District. This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2,000 years ago. Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficult to reach. The area is one of the loneliest and wildest areas in the United States. Another area of the park is called the Needles. It includes long, thin, red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand. A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it. A one-hour trip in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park’s red rocks, arches and flat areas where ancient Indian people once lived. From high in the air, visitors can clearly see the third area of the park——a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the Sky. The island was formed between the two rivers. Another interesting formation is called the Upheaval Dome. This is a huge hole about four hundred and fifty meters deep and one point five kilometers wide. It is considered to be the most unusual geological structure in the area. 33.Why is Canyonlands National Park referred to as wild America? A.There is no access for people to get close to it.
