It seems as if the children’s publishing industry is developing rapidly. Here are some books every young child should have in their book diet. The Peter Rabbit books by Beatrix Potter It’s best to have a copy of the original stories, with the original drawings done by Beatrix Potter herself. In The Tale of Peter Rabbit are the delightful tales of Peter Rabbit. Included in the series are also cute little stories about mice. These books have sweet stories that teach lessons. The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss Dr. Seuss is, of course, the master of children’s literature. Dr. Seuss teaches children to play with language and have a good time reading. The pictures are wonderful and inspire lots of fun questions. Big kids will like re-reading Dr. Seuss along with their younger sisters and brothers. Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey The story of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard is shown by simple pencil drawings that help children use their imaginations. The story explores the city of Boston as the Mallards look for a place to get their ducklings safely across the city. Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack are good examples of obedience(顺从) as they follow Mrs. Mallard through the city. The Very Hungry Caterpillar(毛虫) and other books by Eric Carle The Eric Carle books have delightful pictures, full of bright colors and interesting detail. In The Very Hungry Caterpillar, children see the life cycle of a butterfly through the eyes of a caterpillar that is hungry. The children will laugh at all the food the caterpillar eats and be overjoyed by the beautiful butterfly at the end. All the Eric Carle books are fun for kids and parents, with simple ideas and beautiful art. There are many children’s books available, and this list is only the beginning. However, these are all essential to a good children’s library. 51. In which of the following books were the drawings done by the author? A. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. B. Make Way for Ducklings. C. A. parents B. animals C. drawing skills D. language learning B My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up to situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants, “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous. This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon(三项全能). On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together. And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face. I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine. Shine on, sweet baby. 56. Kelly is nervous when ________. A. situations are new to her B. she changes into a leader C. she is away from her mom D. boys are around her 57. We can know from Paragraph 3 ________. A. the race began in the early morning B. the whole family gave Kelly support C. Kelly was eager for her turn in the race D. Kelly prepared for her brother’s birthday party 58. Seeing Kelly’s performance in the race, the author felt ________. A. excited and proud B. anxious and uneasy C. worried and hesitant D. curious and concerned 59. In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “conquered” probably means ________. A. to defeat someone especially in a competition B. to succeed in dealing with or control something C. to become very popular or successful in a place D. to take control of a country or a city and its people by force 60. In the ending paragraphs the author “felt like I won that day” because Kelly _______. A. overcame the fear B. expressed love to her C. won the gold medal D. took part in the sport C My grandma whom we all called Nanny was a solid, first-generation, Italian immigrant. She came to this country with her family on a tiny ship during World War I when she was only 8 years old. During the trip she survived stormy seas, little food, and an attack by German U-boat. After getting here, her large family worked hard to build a new life in America. They never had much money but were rich in love. One day, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my parents and brothers went on a trip. It was just me and Nanny in the house for the weekend. Nanny seemed so happy to be taking care of me all by herself. She made me a special breakfast that first morning. However, all I could do was to complain about how the food was not how Mom always made it, Nanny quietly put down the plate and went into the living room. I followed a minute later and saw that she had tears in her eyes. It was the first time I had ever seen my strong and proud grandmother cry and I was the one who had caused it. I walked over to Nanny, climbed on her lap, and for the first time in my short life I did something else too. I apologized without being told to and asked Nanny to forgive me. She smiled, rubbed my head, and told me I was a good boy even though I didn’t feel like one then. That memory just like my Nanny’s love will stay in my heart forever. It is a sign of both strength and wisdom, Asking for forgiveness helps us to learn, to grow, and to love. 61. Nanny’s family immigrated to America mainly because______. A. they suffered starvation in their homeland B. they wanted to start a rich life in the new land C. they tried to get away from the terrible climate D. their country was in war and they needed peace 62. The boy complained to Nanny that the food ______. A. wasn’t cooked the way his mom did B. was served a bit later than usual C. was prepared in a special way D. was just to his parents taste 63. When seeing Nanny crying in the living room, the author felt ______. A. surprised B. ashamed C. shocked D. annoyed 64. The author mainly wants to tell us that ______. A. forgiveness can be beneficial to people asking for it B. hardships can make children more indifferent C. grandparents are more tolerant than their grandchildren D. family ties can sometimes be misused 65. What kind of person is Nanny in author’s eyes? A. Hardworking and careful B. Joyous and jealous C. Strong-willed and generous D. Kind and sensitive D An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions—including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships—has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges. The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof that the best man, or woman, does not always win. It found that, on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first. The first rounds of figure—skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 14 percent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater. The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order. A contestant who appears first in a contest is two percent less likely to win than one who appears second. A contestant who appears second is two percent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on. The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica, a scientific journal. Robert Hardman, a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making, said that the results were interesting. He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory. “When people make comparison, they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps cautious about the scores they give.” he said. “Later on, when judges are able to compare the contestants to those that have gone before, they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.” 66. Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his ______. A. explanation for the findings B. own achievement in the research C. suggestion to solve the problem D. comments on the findings 67. The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had a ______ percent chance of winning. A. six B. four C. three D. two 68. According to the study, the best competitor does not always win possibly because he/she ______. A. fails to show his/her very best B. is mistakenly put in the running order C. meets with unfair judges D. appears too early before the judges 69. What may be a problem with the judges according to the article? A. They believe the first is seldom the best. B. They can’t remember things well enough. C. They don’t really know what is good. D. They show favor towards the contestants they like. 70. What could be the best title for the passage? A. A contestant who appears last is sure to win. B. Judges have a preference when giving scores. C. The best way to come first is to go last. D. Judges usually made no comparison in contests. 第Ⅱ卷(共35分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 On my first job as a sports editor for the Montpelier Leader Enterprise(MLE), I didn’t get a lot of fan mail, so many attention was caught by letter on my desk one morning. When I opened it, I read:“Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.” It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager, his words couldn’t have been more inspiring. I kept it in my drawer until it got old. Whenever I doubted I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would reread Don’s note and walk on air again. Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of life. “when I made others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.” Over the years, I’ve tried to copy Don and write uplifting words, in a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth. Why are positive note writers in such short supply? My guess is that people who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Thus, it may cause troubles and problems. And it sounds insincere on the phone. Also, writing takes time; it is far easier to pick up the phone. The drawback of phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. A note attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once, savored and treasured, and they bring strength and love to us. Today I sent a warm letter to my old boss. I don’t know if it will make his day, but it made mine. As my friend Don Wolfe said, “Making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too.” 71. What does the underlined part “walk on air” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? (No more than 5 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 72.
