Our conversation was lively and full of news from both sides. Before we parted she said, “You’ll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in’’ I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me, and asking, “Oh, er… what brings you here?” Whatever happened to the unannounced drop-in visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s, it seemed that people—mostly relatives, but also friends—were always popping in. My parents would put coffee on, and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it. The neighbor lady, a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. My Polish relatives arrived in packs…But I never heard my parents say anything like “We weren’t expecting you’’. Drop-in visitors had a certain right of way and became No. 1. What happened to such visits? Actually I know the answer. Times have changed. Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stay-at-home mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest. Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment. 24. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “drop in” in the second paragraph? A. make many friends B. pay a sudden visit C. have a good time D. fix a special date 25. The woman from the neighborhood used to visit the author’s home to__________ A. 1isten to my parents’ story B. meet new friends C. seek comfort from my parents D. taste nice dishes 26. From the third paragraph of the passage, we can infer that__________ A. the author misses the lost good days B. unexpected visitors are still welcome now C. modern people prefer outdoor activities D. there are more jobs for the housewives now 27. What may be the best title for the text? A. Let’s go back to the past B. The days gone with the wind C. Conversation—the bridge between friends D. The lost art of dropping in C There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths: I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family. Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little. I am fat because I burn calories slowly. Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). If fact, although fat people consume more energy that slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately. Exercise is boring. Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it many times. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge. No pain, no gain. Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If you don’t, rest and seek medical advice. 28. What does the author think about being fat? A. It is the family genes that make people fat. B. It is the result of people’s unbalanced lifestyle. C. A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat. D. People are fat because they consume too little energy. 29. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting? A. By taking varied exercise. B. By choosing simple exercise. C. By doing regular exercise. D. By sticking to outdoor exercise. 30. What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising? A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience. B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt. C. Pain in exercise is a precondition(前兆) for reaching your goal. D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body. 31. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To declare the importance of keeping fit. B. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit. C. To clarify some misunderstanding about fatness and exercise. D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise. D If your child is a couch potato, you might consider buying a dog. That’s because new research has determined that children from dog-owning families exercise more than those without dogs do. The study’s results show that children with dogs spend an average of 325 minutes doing physical activity per day, 11 times more than those without dogs. They were found to take 360 more steps (4%) than others. Christopher Owen, senior lecturer at St George’s, University of London, led the study. It looked at 2,065 children aged nine to ten, of which 202 (about 10%) owned dogs. Activity monitors were used to record the children’s daily movement levels over seven days. Based on the findings, Owen and his colleagues now believe dog ownership can encourage children to be more active. A pet dog in the house may also help to combat rising childhood obesity(肥胖). But Owen also raised a good question. He said, “The fact of more active lifestyles of children from dog-owning families is really interesting—is it that owning a dog makes you more active or that more active families choose to have a dog? It’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg question. Long-term studies are needed to answer it, but it may be a bit of both. “Previous studies have compared adult activity levels before and after getting a dog, and found that they do become more active afterwards. This study is new in showing that children who have a dog are more active, but, again, long-term studies are needed to see if the effect is seen before and after owning a dog.” Owen thinks further work is needed to determine how much of dog-owning children’s physical activity is actually undertaken with their pet. 32. Owen and his colleagues did the study by _____. A. referring to data that former studies provide B. asking their parents to record their children’s daily movement levels C. following the 2,065 children in person D. recording the children’s daily movement levels with activity monitors 33. The underlined word “combat” in Paragraph 3 means “_____”. A. encourage B. find C. fight D. replace 34. The study led by Owen and his colleagues is new in showing that _____. A. children with a dog have better personalities B. children with a dog are more active C. the effect is seen before and after owning a dog D. families with dogs live a happier life 35. In which part of a magazine would you most probably read this passage? ______. A. Discovery B. Education C. Business D.
